Tourism is one of the world's largest industries and one of its fastest growing economic sectors. It has a multitude of impacts, both positive and negative, on people's lives and on the environment. (UNEP).
The European Tourism Policy states that “…The Commission gives consideration to operations to support the development of tourism, especially in rural areas…” and “…Tourism enables the peoples of Europe to discover that, far from being a source of dissension, the cultural variety within their shared civilization can be a source of richness and interest…” This project will foster learning about cultural heritage as a tool for co-operation at regional, trans-boundary and international levels, involving the integration of diverse networked information resources.
