New education and decision
support model for active behaviour
in sustainable development based

and qualitative reasoning

Approach

The NaturNet-Redime portal will be an educational system focusing on sustainable development and the tools developed in previous European projects thereto appertaining. The NaturNet-Redime portal will share existing results and knowledge and will build an educational system.

The NaturNet-Redime project solution will have four basic levels:

  • The first level of the system will be focused on publishing of general principles of sustainability and the description of the tools that have been developed for sustainability. The basic documents and principles of sustainability will be described in the language and form that is understandable to all parts of the community, e.g. local-level stakeholders, policy makers, and citizens.

  • The second level of the system will focus on knowledge and education about tools and practical problems of sustainability using such attractive methods as GIS, multimedia, virtual presentation etc. Which will be able to show the effects of alternative practices and will be able to model influences of human activities on the current situation. This level will be implemented using the principles of the semantic Web and Web services, which will allow direct sharing of tools from different projects, based on standardised protocols.

  • The third level will support the study of aspects of sustainability not only in offices or classrooms but also directly in the terrain. The modern mobile Internet will bring educational contents directly to end users supporting them in the terrain.

  • The fourth level will be a system that enables non-experts to develop casual models of sustainable development scenarios, built from model fragments developed by experts, to learn about system behaviour and evaluate the likely effects of alternative scenarios. This approach will be made possible by developing an interactive modelling environment (QR workbench) and appropriate learning materials that make expert knowledge about sustainability available to non-experts.
